Shooter Classifications


Age Based

  • shooting rig requirements for age based Categories "

    • Any centre fire single action pistol.

    • Any pistol calibre tube fed rifle with exposed hammer

    • Any double barrel shotgun with or without external hammers and without automatic ejectors

    • Any pump or lever action shotgun with external hammers such as Winchester '97 ( excluding the disallowed Marlin Pump).

    • "Age based Categories "

  • Wrangler (36 years of age or greater)

  • Cowboy/Cowgirl (17 years and up)

  • Forty-Niners (49 years of age or greater)

  • Seniors (60 years of age or greater)

  • Silver Seniors (65 years of age or greater)

  • Elder Statesmen/Grand Dames (70 years of age or greater)

  • Cattle Baron/Cattle Baroness (age 75 and over)

  • Young Guns (age 14 through 16)

  • Buckaroos/Buckeretts (13 and under)


Shooting Style

  • Duelist (age 17 - 59)

    Senior Duelist (age 60 and over)

    • Any competitor using a traditional style revolver but shooting it with only one hand

  • Duelist Outlaw (age 17 and up)

    * all 3 guns shot from the hip

  • Gunfighter (age 17 - 59)

    Senior Gunfighter (age 60 and over)

    • Any competitor using traditional style revolvers but shooting with one gun in each hand.

    • If you wish to shoot in the Gunfighter class you MUST pass a proficiency test prior to the start of the match.

Black Powder

  • Frontier Cartridge

    • Black powder MUST be used in all firearms

    • Only SxS or lever shotguns allowed

    • Any SASS legal pistol cal rifle allowed

    • Pistols with adjustable sights are NOT allowed in this class

  • Frontiersman

    • Black powder MUST be used in all firearms

    • Only SxS or lever shotguns allowed

    • Any SASS legal pistol cal rifle allowed

    • Cap & Ball revolvers MUST be used in this class

    • Revolvers must be shot Dualist or Double Dualist 

    • Pistols with adjustable sights are NOT allowed in this class

Clothing and Shooting Rig Requirements

  • B Western

    • Any centre fire single action pistol.

    • Any pistol calibre tube fed rifle with exposed hammer

    • Any double barrel shotgun with or without external hammers and without automatic ejectors

    • Any pump action shotgun with exposed hammer such as Winchester '97.

    • Classic Cowboy

      • With the growing interest in this category, a level playing field is required amongst all clubs. The AFS will require Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl to be shot according to SASS rules. For those who are not SASS members or do not have access to the requirements, they are right here:

    • Ladies

      • Any girl, woman,or female shooting in any of the above classes.

Note: Only juniors may shoot as Juniors. Only females may shoot as Ladies. Only seniors may shoot as Seniors. There are no men's categories. No competitor is compelled to shoot in one of these categories by reason of his or her age or gender. A competitor may compete in any category for which they qualify based on the firearms they are using.
